Hummingbird Moth

Had an interesting visitor to the garden tonight when I was out at dusk watering. Very cool! Have heard of these things before, but had never seen one in person before.

Beneficial???

Assassin bugs are one thing, but a baby dragon? If I leave it alone, do you think it'll go after the bad bugs??

Assassin Bug (nymph)

I was taking pictures of my lovely garlic chive blossoms and spotted a very odd and colorful little bug on one of the flowers. Found a very cool website online called BugGuide where you can post pictures of insects and if someone knows what it is, they'll ID it for you. And that's exactly what happened! Turns out the bug is the nymph (immature) form of the assassin bug, a beneficial insect that goes after dreaded aphids, amongst other things, yippee!!!

Here's the picture of the insect that I posted to the site:

Name that bug!

I've been so remiss in getting pictures of the garden this summer. But it's been damn hot and I just don't want to be out there during the day! At any rate, happily, the garlic chives are coming back and blooming like fools! Got one this morning which shows a squatter, of sorts. Don't know what the heck this bug is. Almost looks like a young praying mantis but it's the wrong color or colors...
